Earthquake safety: what to do
Earthquakes strike without warning. Knowing what to do in the first seconds of shaking is what keeps people safe.
What to do
- Drop, cover and hold on. Get under a sturdy table and hold on until the shaking stops.
- Stay away from windows and heavy objects. Do not run outside during shaking.
- Near the coast? If shaking is strong or lasts a long time, move to high ground right away. Do not wait for an official warning.
- Expect aftershocks. Check for gas leaks and damage before going back inside.
