Volcanic eruption safety: what to do

Eruptions bring ashfall, lava, toxic gas and fast mudflows called lahars that follow river valleys.

If you are in danger right now, call your local emergency number. Find the number for your country.

What to do

  1. Follow evacuation orders right away and avoid river valleys, where mudflows travel.
  2. During ashfall stay indoors, close windows and wear a mask and eye protection outside.
  3. Avoid driving in heavy ash.
