Tsunami safety: what to do

A tsunami can reach the coast minutes after a large undersea earthquake. Strong or long shaking near the sea is a warning in itself.

If you are in danger right now, call your local emergency number. Find the number for your country.

What to do

  1. Move inland or to high ground immediately, at least 30 m (100 ft) above sea level if you can.
  2. Go on foot if roads are jammed. Do not go to the shore to watch.
  3. Stay away until officials say it is safe. Waves can keep coming for many hours.
